Al Ain University Secures Research Grant for AI-Powered “Listening to Abu Dhabi” Project

Al Ain University has achieved a new research milestone as a team from its College of Engineering secured a grant under the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network (ADERN) 2026, an initiative of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). The winning project leverages artificial intelligence to detect and analyze environmental noise sources, contributing to the protection of sensitive areas and improved quality of life. The University was also honored by ADERN in recognition of its collaboration in environmental research, while the winning project and its research team received recognition for their achievement.

Led by Dr. Yazan Nawaf Al Ahmad, faculty member at the College of Engineering and Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, the project, titled “Listening to Abu Dhabi: Using Artificial Intelligence to Identify Noise Sources and Protect Sensitive Areas,” was selected among the winning research proposals for 2026.

The project aims to develop an AI-powered system capable of monitoring and analyzing environmental noise sources and identifying the areas most affected. By providing accurate data and insights, the system will support environmental planning and informed decision-making to mitigate noise pollution, protect sensitive areas, and contribute to a more sustainable urban environment.

The research team also includes Dima Al Kharraz and Hassan Al Sheehan, two master's students from the College of Engineering. Their involvement reflects the University's commitment to engaging postgraduate students in applied research projects and empowering them to apply their knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions to environmental and societal challenges.

During a special recognition ceremony, ADERN honored Al Ain University, represented by Prof. Amer Qasim, President of the University, in appreciation of its collaboration with the network in environmental research and other areas of mutual interest, as well as its contributions to research efforts addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. The winning project and its research team were also recognized for the innovative concept and its potential to deliver scientific and technological solutions that benefit the environment and society.

This achievement highlights Al Ain University's growing contribution to applied scientific research and its commitment to addressing national priorities, particularly those related to environmental sustainability and emerging technologies. It also underscores the University's efforts to strengthen collaboration with leading research institutions and specialized organizations.

The research grant and institutional recognition further demonstrate the importance of research partnerships in fostering innovation, facilitating knowledge exchange, and translating scientific outcomes into practical solutions that advance sustainable development, in line with the UAE's vision for a knowledge-driven, innovation-based economy.
