Research Interests

My research interests have been focused on the area of synthetic organic chemistry for medicinal purposes. More specifically, I have been working on developing new methodologies to facilitate the synthesis of structurally complex nitrogen-containing polycyclic compounds. My interest in this research area arises from the importance of these nitrogen heterocycles in the pharmaceutical industry. As of early 2021, over 280,000 natural products have been isolated and fully characterized of which a considerable percentage contain one or more nitrogen heterocycles in their structures. More than half of the USFDA approved pharmaceuticals are either natural products or they owe their origins to natural products. In addition, recent analysis of the USFDA data base has revealed that 59% of unique small-molecule drugs contain a nitrogen heterocycle.
